The wireless data service discussed here refers to 802.11 wireless data service for individual computers (this is what people usually refer to as 'WiFi'). 802.11 refers to the set of standards defining how wireless local area network communication is implemented. Although the term 'wireless' can also refer to point-to-point wireless WAN circuits, these are not included here as a service available for direct purchase, though they are an option considered when ordering off campus or point-to-point circuits. Please note that 'wireless' in this context also does not include cellular telephone or cellular data service.
Two different wireless networks are available, UAWiFi and UAPublic. Users may select which network to connect to on an individual basis. UAWiFi requires a UANetID in order to connect. UAPublic is provided as a service to the general community; it does not require any authentication credentials (users must still agree to terms of service), but it provides less bandwidth than UAWiFi. Members of the University community are encouraged to use UAWiFi for faster, more secure service. Using a secured wireless network is recommended for any time you will be accessing a site where you use a password and/or submit credit card or other personal or financial information.
There are some areas of campus currently not included in wireless coverage. Eventually all areas of the campus will be covered, but the time frame for extending coverage to a particular area will depend on budget availability and other factors. Users wishing to add wireless coverage sooner should contact Telecommunications Services at (520) 621-8999 and request an estimate for wireless installation in a specific area. There will be costs associated with new wireless deployment outside the University-wide schedule, but the exact numbers will depend on the design demands of the location.
