New Security Feature for URLs in Outlook email

Aug. 2, 2023

Microsoft Safe Links being implemented August 9

Starting Wednesday, Aug. 9, the University will implement Microsoft Safe Links, a new security feature to enhance protection from known fraudulent emails and other phishing scams.

What to expect

Safe Links scans hyperlinks within Microsoft Outlook emails and other Office 365 applications (e.g., Word, Excel) to identify known malicious websites. As a result:

  • Links within your email or web browser may display a prefix "nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com"
    • You may experience a slight delay prior to reaching a website destination.
    • Exception: Arizona.edu and the University’s Zoom links will be safe by default.
  • If you select a malicious link, a warning message will alert you to a potential threat.

Remain cautious: If you receive a suspicious email, report it to phish@arizona.edu. Only open emails and links sent by a reliable and trusted source. Safe Links provides extra protection but does not guarantee that all links are safe.

If you experience any technical issues with Safe Links, contact the 24/7 Support Center.
