The University of Arizona outsources student email service to Google Apps Education Edition, which also provides Google applications such as calendaring; IM and video chat; and collaborative word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, website building, and more.
Students at the University of Arizona are automatically given a UA email account when creating their NetID. From October 30, 2009, these new email accounts are hosted by Google. Student University email accounts continue to be username @ email.arizona.edu.
Student email provided by Google offers numerous benefits:
• over 7 GB of storage space
• access via webmail, preferred POP or IMAP email client, or mobile device
• email organized with Google's outstanding search tools
• Google's excellent security and uptime record
• educational contract, which means no ads and full privacy protection for your content
Timeline:
November 2 through December 19 Students with existing University email accounts have the option to migrate from their existing University account to CatMail at any time.
December 20 Any student email accounts still on the University-hosted system will be migrated by UITS.
February 1 Read-only access in WebMail ends.
To opt in, go to catmailoptin.arizona.edu.
Once you Opt In, you will have access to Google Apps and receive new emails in Google Mail immediately. Old emails in your University-hosted email will join a migration queue. Logging in to catmailoptin.arizona.edu again will let you check the status of your migration. You will continue to have read-only access to old email through WebMail through January 2010.
A secondary CatMail password will be generated and emailed to you. This password will be used when accessing your CatMail Mail or Calendar through an application or mobile device, rather than on the Web. If you lose your CatMail password or need to change it, visit NetID.
Faculty and staff may opt in to CatMail to gain access to Google Apps, but will not have email migration or delivery to CatMail.
Access CatMail on the Web with your UA Net ID and password.
Access Google Apps in CatMail via the Web with your UA Net ID and password. Each of the Apps is accessible while in another, or log in directly:
• catmail.arizona.edu takes you directly to your Mail.
• catcal.arizona.edu takes you directly to your Calendar.
• catdocs.arizona.edu takes you directly to your Documents.
The first time you log in, Google will have you go through a verification page; after the first time, you will land directly on your destination page.
You can also access CatMail with an email application (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc.) or mobile device. While you are logged in to Mail, go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP and follow the directions given. Use your CatMail password when configuring your application or device, not your NetID password.
